Investing in Employees Just Makes Sense

Your employees are important. They are the faces of your brand. Some of your employees work directly with your customers. Other employees work with your suppliers, affiliates and other professional partners. Employees who feel fulfilled, appreciated and challenged at their jobs will work harder. They will also be more committed to your brand and step up to the plate when challenges are presented. When your employees are willing to go the extra mile for you, they will be more willing to make your customers happy. This will increase your productivity and your profits.

We've put together a quick list of easy ways you can keep your employees happy.

  • Be Visible - Prove that your employees that your managers, supervisors, executives, etc. are accessible and available. Having the people in charge around illustrates a shared commitment. Gives your employees the chance to intermingle with the bosses every now and then.

  • Say Thank You - Showing gratitude and expressing thanks can go a long way in boosting employee morale. Showing your appreciation to your staff with a handwritten thank you note or sending out an appreciative email is always valued.

  • Host Employee Outings - Company outings don't have to be extravagant or expensive. Have a potluck and enjoy each others company over a long lunch. Take the team bowling or organize a cookout at a local park. Let co-workers connect and relax. Give them something to look forward to. Take a break from the stress and work of the office and just take some time to laugh.

  • Be Flexible - The economy has taken many workers on a roller coaster ride in the recent past. As job descriptions changed and layoffs were happening, many businesses recognized the need for flexibility. As the workforce stabilizes, flexibility is still an important quality to maintain. Close the office an hour early on a nice Friday afternoon. Be understanding when a sick child makes someone a few minutes late. Show your flexibility, and your employees will appreciate it.

  • Make it Personal - As a leader, make it a personal goal to invest some time and energy in your employees and co-workers. Ask about weekend plans, listen to the stories, and show concern when appropriate. Show your co-workers that you care and you'll show them that the company cares.

  • Hire Good Fits - You've established a corporate culture at your business. The long lasting employees have embraced that culture and thrive in it. Hiring new employees can be tough. To likelihood that your new hires will become long term employees, be on the lookout for candidates with similar drives, ambitions and work styles as your current successful employees.

  • Make Evaluations a Priority - Evaluations can be nerve-wracking for employees and bosses alike. Constructive criticism is an important part of job growth and career satisfaction. Make sure to build in some time to let the employee give suggestions and ask questions. Make the evaluation a two way street. Ask for feedback on the company as well. When possible, give thanks and encouragement.

  • Promote From Within - When possible, groom your employees for future success within the company. Too often, companies search for new candidates for jobs that current employees would excel in. Invest in your employees and coach them to succeed in your company. Career development is important to employees, be as committed to the professional growth as they are.
