Ways to Invest in Employees

Job training is necessary in the workplace because it teaches employees the skills necessary to effectively perform his or her job. Companies often ignore training their new employees because after new workers are hired, it is assumed they acquire the skills necessary for the job since they soared through interviews or skill tests. However, once new employees are on the job there may be skills they are unsure about. This can lead to mistakes which could get them fired and cause the employer to hire new employees. This creates a cycle of hiring and firing, which takes up valuable time when this time could be spent training employees. To eliminate the cycle, it is smart for employers to invest in training their employees.

On the Job Training

On the job training is when a professional trainer, boss, or experienced employee instructs employees in the workplace. This kind of training can include verbal and written instruction, demonstration, observation and hands-on practice. The goal of on the job training is to teach employees basic workplace skills, but it also helps new employees quickly adapt to the workplace and learn how to fulfill the job's expectations. Experienced workers can also benefit from on the job training, to help refresh their knowledge.


Webinars, or web-based seminars, are online workshops that have many advantages both for the employer and employee. People don't have to travel to webinars like they do for conferences, which eliminate travel costs for the employers. Webinars are also very flexible and, if desired, allow employees to participate from the comfort of their own office or home.

Webinars should not be confused with webcasts since webinars substitute face-to-face conversations with discussion boards. A model for a webinar could be four weeks with a lecture uploaded to the Website each Monday and employees participate in discussion boards. Discussion boards are an advantage because they remain on the Website and employees can refresh information learned by revisiting discussion boards as they please.


Apprenticeships give employers the opportunity to shape inexperienced workers to fit existing and future jobs. This is beneficial because it is a chance for an employee to work alongside their employer to learn skills necessary for the job. With apprenticeships, workers have the chance to learn a desired trade or profession while still earning an income. Apprenticeships combine on the job training with formal instruction structured in a program that will give the employee lasting knowledge.

Your employees are how customers see your brand, so you want to make sure they are as skilled and knowledgeable as possible. Training methods like webinars, on the job training and apprenticeships are great ways for employees to get hands on experience and gain knowledge that they can apply to the job. Remember that employee training might cost you money now, but your business and customers will thank you in the long run.
