For many, the New Year is a time for people to create a resolution or goal to better themselves or their lifestyle in the following year. Resolutions are great, but there are many small adjustments that you can make to your daily routine that can help make big improvements in the long run. See these 5 quick changes you can make to improve your mental and physical health in 2014 and beyond:
A little stress in your life is normal, but too much stress can be harmful to your health and relationships. There are many techniques you can use to reduce stress, including breathing exercises, talking to friends or family, and learning to say no, but if you’re looking to go beyond these basics, we think this article from WebMD can help.
Get Enough Sleep
You have probably heard numerous times that it’s important to get enough sleep, but have you ever wondered why? According to a Harvard study, not getting enough sleep can lead to weight fluctuations, mood swings, irritability, irregular heartbeat and altering your immune system. The National Sleep Foundation recommends adults get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night, so start resting up!
Drink Plenty of Water
Our bodies are made up of roughly 60 percent water, so it’s no surprise that drinking enough water is important to our health. In addition to keeping your body hydrated, drinking at least eight 8-ounce glasses of fluids per day is good for your skin, kidneys and muscles.
Floss Your Teeth
You have probably had your dentist ask you at least once if you floss regularly. If your answer is no, aim to begin flossing once per day. In addition to healthier teeth and gums, flossing can help protect your body from bacteria and diseases including systemic and periodontal diseases. Make it a goal to floss regularly so the next time your dentist asks, you can proudly answer, "Yes!"
While it may seem silly to wear sunscreen during any season except summer, the truth is it’s not. If your habit is only applying sunscreen when it’s 80 degrees and sunny, if you’re lounging poolside or don’t wear any at all, 2014 is the time to start! When you plan to spend time outside, it is a good idea to apply a minimum of SPF 15 to your exposed skin and reapply every 2 hours.
